Recap: Michael’s Top 3 in 2023

Michael Philander has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Guyana. He is a member of EMC’s Marine Team and leads the Participatory Fish Study to collect, document and report on fishing activities by artisanal fisherfolks along the coast of Guyana.

Reflecting on a transformative year, Michael graciously shared his top three highlights with us:

  1. Safety Skills Boost:I received Compressed Air Breathing System (CA-EBS) and Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency (T-BOSEIT) certifications, enhancing my ability to handle offshore challenges swiftly and effectively, especially in the dynamic world of oil and gas. For me, safety is not just a protocol but a way of life. Therefore, staying current with safety standards is a must to ensure the well-being of everyone in any environment.
  1. Self-Discovery:We have had a dynamic and transformative year at EMC, filled with exciting projects, new connections, diverse training opportunities, extensive travel, and team growth. I’m lucky to work in the marine and fisheries sectors, fields I am passionate about, and this year’s intensity helped catalyse my personal, academic, and professional growth.
  1. Offshore Adventures:I had a rare and enriching experience on an offshore assignment. It offered a different perspective of Guyana’s natural beauty, with stunning sunsets and deep blue waters. I also had the opportunity to interact with and learn from highly skilled professionals from Guyana and around the world. Although I missed the familiar tastes of Guyanese cuisine, the experience was incredibly rewarding.
