Collaboration for Sustainable Tourism in the Mahaica Watershed
On July 17, 2024, EMC, in collaboration with the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), hosted an engagement session with tour operators to promote sustainable tourism in the Mahaica Watershed. This initiative is part of a broader effort to protect the Watershed’s unique ecological and cultural heritage.
Ms. Shannon Stephenson of EMC emphasised the Mahaica Watershed’s ecological importance and the challenges it faces, urging tour operators to support sustainable tourism. Ms. Kandila Ramotar highlighted EMC’s commitment to conservation, while Mr. Kamrul Baksh of GTA detailed efforts to enhance sustainable practices and safety in tourism. Ms. Carla Vantull from (Tourism & Hospitality Association of Guyana) THAG stressed the need for collective conservation efforts and stakeholder collaboration.
Several key tour operators, including Bimichi Eco Lodge, Wilderness Explorer, Eco Travel, Kanuku Tours, Mahaica River Tours, Touring Guyana, 592 Tours, and Savannah Tours Guyana, participated in the session. EMC and GTA provided guidance on sustainable tourism practices, focusing on responsible waste management, eco-friendly transportation, and reducing tourism’s carbon footprint. The session also highlighted the importance of involving local communities to ensure economic benefits and support for conservation efforts.
This engagement underscored the importance of collaboration between EMC, GTA, and the tour operators to protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Mahaica Watershed. By aligning tourism practices with conservation goals, the partners are working to safeguard this important ecosystem.
