Biodiversity
Guyana is a country rich in biodiversity. The protection of biodiversity features prominently in the regulatory framework for projects, especially those in the forest areas. EMC has supported companies in biodiversity assessment and management for over 10 years. EMC’s experience include:
- Preparation of Biodiversity Management Plans for a large-scale gold mining operation in the Siparuni area and large-scale bauxite mining operations in the Demerara area.
- Conducted Biodiversity Monitoring for a large-scale gold mining operation in the Siparuni area and a large-scale bauxite mining operation in the Demerara area.
- Conducted a Baseline Biodiversity Assessment for a large-scale gold mining operation in the Siparuni area and Rapid Biodiversity Assessments for conservancies in the Demerara and Berbice areas.
- Assisted with marine turtle telemetry exercises at Shell Beach to tag and track movements of marine turtle species.
EMC undertook a review of the legislative framework and roles and responsibilities of key regulatory agencies as part of a larger national project on mainstreaming biodiversity monitoring.
EMC has lead a major ecosystem services study across the coast of Guyana which examined the human-ecosystem interactions between local communities and the coastal environment and where the use of biodiversity featured prominently.
