World Oceans Day 2021: EMC Commends Guyana on Joining the Global Oceans Alliance

World Oceans Day is marked on June 8 every year as a reminder of the significant role the oceans and marine ecosystems play in everyday life. The ocean covers over 70 percent of the planet and generates as much as 50 percent of earth’s oxygen. It is the planet’s climate regulator, home to much of the earth’s biodiversity and a vital element of the world’s economy. This year’s theme, “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods,” reminds us of the impact of human actions on the oceans and the need for sustainable management.

EMC commends the Government of Guyana on joining the Global Oceans Alliance which has set a goal to protect at least 30 percent of the global ocean in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) by 2030. According to EMC’s Managing Director, Shyam Nokta, “The commitments made today represent another step forward in Guyanas efforts to protect and preserve marine and coastal ecosystems as the country reaffirms its commitment to a low carbon development path.
