EMC Supports GFC On MRVS Awareness and Capacity Development Initiative

Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC Inc.) is currently supporting the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) to execute an awareness and capacity development initiative on the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification System (MRVS).

The MRVS, a key component of Guyana’s national Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) programme, tracks deforestation and forest degradation in the country over time and is key to understanding forest change trends and drivers. Guyana’s MRVS has, over the past ten years, generated a wealth of data that informs policy setting in the natural resource sector and guides mitigation strategies, particularly in forest management. After ten years of progress, Guyana is a global leader in the implementation of REDD+ and the MRVS, partly due to continuous dialogue with communities and stakeholders that created feedback loops to address concerns, build capacity, and refine mapping and reporting processes.

As part of the awareness and capacity building exercise, a team from EMC Inc. and the GFC recently met with forestry stakeholders in Essequibo Coast and the Pomeroon River, Region 2. The goal was to build knowledge and awareness of REDD+ and the MRVS, provide updated information on the findings of the MRVS and receive feedback from stakeholders. Stakeholders actively engaged in the discussions, and their feedback used to inform Summary Reports submitted to the GFC.
