Biodiversity of the Area PDF Print E-mail
The area’s unique and varied biological diversity is still to be discovered and documents. There has been very little research and data collection done at Saxacalli and much of the area is still unknown in terms of its ecosystem and biodiversity value.

The forest typing of the area is mainly Mora/swamp forest characterized by a mixture of clay, loam and brown sand soils. This has given rise to an interesting diversity of flora that includes timber species such as greenheart, kabacalli, crabwood, and mora species; unique mix of epiphytes including many orchids and other non-timber forest products such as cufa and mucru as well as palms such as the ite, courru and kokerite.

The faunal diversity of the area includes such species as the agouti, deer, tapir, wild hog, armadillo, yellow-footed turtles, jaguars, ocelots, sloths, squirrel monkeys, capuchin and howler monkeys. The area also has a number of fish species, amongst them are Basha, cata-back, dogfish, tiger fish, dog fish, lungfish, haimara among others. The bird diversity of the Saxacalli area is one of its unique features and the abundance includes many species of vultures, hawks, falcon, currasows, hummingbirds, kingfishers, jacamar, woodpeckers, toucans, macaws and parrots.

From the limited data collection and research done to date, a Preliminary List of Fauna and Flora of the area has been drawn up.
