In October 2001, with assistance from the Iwokrama International Centre, the Saxacalli Wildlife Club was established. Two wildlife research assistants, Chris Chin and Andrew Cornelius spent one week at the village where they worked with the teachers and students on the basics of organizing and mobilizing students and youths in the community to form the wildlife club. The practical sessions included rapid surveys of the flora and fauna within the community and they were able to make preliminary identification of birds, fishes, reptiles, mammals and the main timber trees found within the vicinity of the village.
