In 2001, a community handicraft project was started with support from the Commonwealth Youth Programme and executed by the Rural Women’s Network, a local organization working with community-based groups across Guyana.

The project equipped community members with the skills to harvest, prepare non-timber forest products (which are abundant in the area) and make items of handicraft as well as teach them basic management skills such as bookkeeping and marketing skills.

The training focused on both handicraft and wood carving and sculpting with the trainers being drawn from other Amerindian communities that are involved with similar projects. While the focus group for the project was mainly the Saxacalli Sewing Group, the project received the interest and participation of men and young people of the village.

Items of craft can be purchased at the village and efforts are underway to construct a Visitor’s Centre in the community to serve as an outlet.
